I love how she mimes out her spirit fading away as the sun rises. You really feel her slipping away in his arms again as he begs her to stay. But with the last bit of time she has left, she gives him her blessings and says her final farewell to the man she loved before finally going back to rest within the earth again. Such a beautifully romantic, but tragic ending 💔

Hardest piece for a male dancer? Apparently when Oberons run off stage they are using the few seconds they have to gasp for air before their next entrance.

What I noticed was how the emotional immediacy of Dame Monica’s facial expression adds to every line and move of her limbs. She is not just commanding the Willis to emerge fora bloodthirsty attack. She is sending her empathy out to the wounded innocents, and she evokes suspense, even vulnerability, when they don’t show up immediately. She cares primarily to see if they are still part of the sisterhood, whether their common suffering still binds them, whether the agony of their past betrayal will again motivate them to close ranks with a newcomer to the despair of the abandoned . She is not angry and cruel, but determined to never let the callousness of men who cause suffering be forgotten. She embodies righteous indignation and needs the support of others who remember that pain!

I wonder how many people realize that ballet was defined in most of the world by the Ballets Russes companies, not Balanchine. His takeover didn't gain ground until the 1980s.

What I remember in the 70s were the NYC Ballet, Joffrey, and ABT were important in NY. The 1960s had Royal Ballet Co. with Margot Fonteyn. Balanchine and his star Susanne Farrell (sp?) were well known in the late 70s. And then of course Alvin Ailey! And Arthur Mitchell. Modern dancr: Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham, Martha Grahem, Gus Solomon, etc. all in the 70s in NYC.
